2+ is better than one. The importance of having a Team
by: Myles Jury
Introduction: Over the past couple years I have had countless people ask me, “If you could give one piece of advice to upcoming fighters who want to compete in the UFC and be successful, what would it be?” After seven fights in the UFC and over thirteen years in the sport of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), I always tell them, “get a good team and surround yourself with people who will help you reach your true potential.” A team holds you accountable for your daily actions, provides knowledge, guidance and supports you in helping achieve personal goals. These people on your team should have your best interest at heart. They need to bring something to the table in terms of adding value to your career, while you will strive to do the same. Having a team mindset of “everyone is here to help each other get better,” is usually a recipe for success!
The biggest advantage to having a team is you can get more accomplished then if you were doing it on your own. Lets think of yourself and a team as car batteries, I know it may seem silly but seriously picture yourself as a car battery. Now you by yourself is only one battery and a team can have two plus car batteries. Which one is more effective, one car battery (you alone) or two plus car batteries (your team) put together? Yes, two or more car batteries have way more energy and power then one single car battery. When we use “car batteries” as a metaphor it makes you think, “what if you had a team of people helping you achieve your daily plans and weren’t trying to do everything alone?” Wouldn’t you be able to accomplish so much more? Everyone has a team wether they notice it or not, from the average family household to the everyday business. A family may have a team of Father, Mother, Son and Daughter, while a business may simply have a team of a boss and employee. Let me give you a example of my own personal team that helps me in my career of being in the UFC.
Team Fury (team for my career in the UFC)
Fans/Friends/Family
- These are the people that follow my journey in the UFC and support me throughout the ups and downs. They are there for me inside and outside the cage, to help give me the motivation to keep reaching for the stars.
Manager (Ryan Hass)
- This is like my CEO. He is the man behind the scenes making everything happen from fights to everyday planning.
- This is my backbone in all aspects from marketing, branding and other ventures.
Head Coach (Eric Del Fierro)
- This is the guy that oversees my training schedule and makes sure I’m becoming stronger as a fighter, athlete and person.
Striking Coach (Tony Palafox)
- This coach provides me with knowledge and training in boxing, kickboxing, etc.
Wrestling Coach (Darryl Christian)
- This coach provides me with knowledge and training in wrestling.
Grappling Coach (Professor Don Richard, Caique & Neil Melanson)
- This coach provides me with knowledge and training in Jiu Jitsu, catch wrestling, etc.
Strength & Conditioning Coach (George Castro)
- This coach provides me with knowledge and training in helping me become physically stronger, faster, explosive, agile, etc.
Sports Psychologist (Dr. John Boesky)
- This coach helps to make sure mentally and emotionally I am ready for competition.
Nutritionist (JW Culinary & 5 Star Gourmet)
- This coach makes sure I’m eating correctly so I’m healthy to compete.
Doctor (Dr. Brad Archer, MD, FACP)
- My doctor helps keep me staying 100% healthy and educated on getting back to 100% if I’m sick or injured.
Lawyer (David Nelmark)
- My lawyer keeps me protected from anything and everything, while making sure all matters are running properly.
Financials (Robert Kiyosaki – RichDad.com)
- Financial education and making sure my financials are being done correctly.
As you can see when I go out to compete, I’m definitely not alone. There is a whole Team Fury army backing me up everyday. They will help support the team in anything that “WE” pursue! That seems a lot more powerful then me stepping out there alone. So just like in the “car battery” metaphor, you can achieve a whole lot more with a team of people supporting you every step of the way, then you could trying to do everything on your own. So my question to you is, Who is your team? Maybe you already have a huge team that works well, or maybe your just starting to build a team. Either way, it doesn’t matter as long as you are pursuing some form of a team environment. It is my belief that humans were not meant to live or work alone, just like the human spirit needs love or adventure at times, it also needs a strong team backing it. No matter if your a mother, doctor, son, or an athlete, you need people around that can help you along the way in this journey called life. So no matter what your team consists of, keep working hard and helping each other achieve the results you desire. No matter what, you will always accomplish more with a strong team around you in life then you will by yourself.
In a future blog, I’ll get into detail on the characteristics I look for in a person to avoid having a “bad apple.” For now, remember, 2+ is always better than one!
